Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Cynthia Erivo face off for a Best Actress Accolade

Two British actresses have been selected as nominees for the Best Actress Award by the Critics Choice Organization.  Cynthia Erivo, a Tony, Emmy, and Grammy Award-winning actress who plays Elphaba in the movie “Wicked” is nominated alongside fellow British Marianne Jean-Baptiste who plays a grumpy old woman in “Hard Truths.”

Other contenders in the Best Actress category are Karla Sofía Gascón for the movie “Emilia Pérez, Angelina Jolie for the movie “Maria” and Demi Moore for “The Substance.”

Cynthia Erivo named Best Actress by CCA

Movies “Conclave” and “Wicked” lead this year’s film contenders, having earned 11 nominations each. “Dune: Part Two” and the Zoe Saldaña starrer “Emilia Pérez” follow closely behind with 10 nods apiece.

The winners will be revealed at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards which airs live on the E! Channel on Sunday, January 12.

The Critics Choice Association (CCA) is the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing almost 600 media critics and entertainment journalists and their annual awards show honor the best in cinematic and television achievement.

Historically, they are the most accurate predictor of Academy Award nominations.

“This year brought us an incredible wealth of storytelling and performances, leading to indescribably close races for nominations,” said CCA CEO Joey Berlin. “We are honored to be able to celebrate our landmark 30th year of the Critics Choice Awards with this talented group of nominees and are thrilled to bring viewers our best show yet.”
